Laboratory of Cyanobacterial Systematics

Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India

About the Laboratory

We are a research group dedicated to exploring the diversity, taxonomy, and evolution of cyanobacteria, the pioneers of oxygenic life on Earth. By integrating morphology, molecular phylogeny, ecology, and bioinformatics, we uncover hidden biodiversity, resolve evolutionary relationships, and document novel taxa. Through research spanning diverse habitats, we strive to advance our understanding of the microorganisms that transformed Earth's atmosphere and continue to shape its biosphere.

Research

Over the past decade, our laboratory has described more than 10 novel cyanobacterial genera and over 70 new species, establishing itself as one of the world's leading and most productive research groups in cyanobacterial systematics. Our research has resolved long-standing taxonomic uncertainties, significantly expanded the known cyanobacterial diversity of India, and provided important insights into the evolution, ecology, and biogeography of cyanobacteria.
